Round 34 of La Liga (LL) sees Athletic Bilbao and Levante go head to
head at the San Mamés stadium. While the ‘Leones’ have improved in the
final stages of the season, Levante hope to take advantage of other
results to confirm safety.
Dauntingly for Levante, Athletic have gained eight of their last 12
points in home games, but are also hoping to reverse a run of two
winless games at their stadium. They have already beaten Levante once
this season, winning the reverse game 2-1.
Athletic’s season has been pretty disappointing. They were knocked out
from the Europa League early and in LL they have been out of the running
to qualify for Europe for some time. However, last Wednesday’s 0-0 draw
at the Bernabéu might be a morale-booster for the Basque side.
Levante’s successful run has let the team hold on to the last safe spot
(17th) for 12 consecutive rounds. The ‘Granotas’ have lost only one game
in the previous seven (W4, D2, L1) and thanks to that record they are
now six points away from their pursuers below.
In the H2H record between these sides, Athletic have only lost once in
nine home games against Levante at San Mamés, winning the other eight.
Players to watch: The talented Iñaki Williams scored an excellent goal
at the Bernabéu against the champions-elect. The striker has two goals
and one assist in his last three games.
Emmanuel Boateng clinched the three points for his side last time out
with a last-minute goal against Málaga. The striker will hope to repeat
this at a stadium where Levante haven’t scored in their last two visits.
Stat attack: Athletic have scored at least once in their last five home
Levante have clinched their last two wins with goals in stoppage time.
They have also scored three goals in the last six away games.
