In-form Real Sociedad will be aiming to close the gap to the top-six
places in La Liga (LL) when they travel to rock-bottom Málaga, who have
already been relegated after ten successive seasons in Spanish
Málaga’s last-gasp 1-0 defeat away to Levante on Thursday condemned José
González’s side to their 13th drop to the second tier with five games
still left to play. Rooted to the bottom of the table with with just 17
points (W4, D5, L24), it’s no longer mathematically possible for Málaga
to overhaul three other relegation battlers.
Real Sociedad arrive at the La Rosaleda on the back of extending their
winning streak to three games with a stunning 3-0 victory over Atlético
Madrid – Atlético hadn’t conceded more than two goals in a league game
since December 2016. Ahead of this round of fixtures, Real Sociedad (43
pts, W12, D7, L14) find themselves eight points adrift of sixth-placed
Villarreal. They are unbeaten and yet to concede (W3, D1, GF9, GA0)
under new boss Imanol Alguacil.
Having beaten Real Sociedad 2-0 in December’s reverse fixture, Málaga
could complete their first LL double of the season. Real Sociedad have
claimed victory in ten of their 32 top-flight visits to Málaga (D7,
L15), and they have lost just one their previous eight games away at the
La Rosaleda in all competitions (W5, D2).
Players to watch: Veteran midfielder Chory Castro has hit the back of
the net in three of Málaga’s only four LL wins so far this season,
including the one over Real Sociedad.
No player has scored the opening goal on more occasions (ten) in LL this
campaign than Real Sociedad striker Willian José (14 goals, three
assists). A lethal deadlock-breaker.
Stat attack: Málaga have lost more LL games (15) by a one-goal margin
than any other side this term.
Only Real Madrid (7.8) have won more corner kicks per match than Real
Sociedad (6.4) in LL this campaign.
