Fifteenth-placed Mainz are hoping to record back-to-back league wins for
the first time this season as they travel to Augsburg to kick off
Sunday’s Bundesliga action.
Mainz are one of three teams that are hovering at the bottom of the
league on 30 points. In 15th position, just nine goals separate Mainz
from Freiburg in 16th place and possible Bundesliga relegation. However,
they are now unbeaten in three Bundesliga games (W1, D2) – their longest
streak without defeat this season!
Augsburg (11th) sit in relative safety in the middle of the table with
37 points – a win here will see them safe from the threat of relegation.
However, they have won only one of the past nine games, collecting only
six points in this period (W1, D3, L5). In their last five games, they
are winless in four and have scored just five goals, while conceding
Overall, the two teams have met 17 times in competitive action. Mainz
have won eight fixtures, Augsburg have won five, with the sides drawing
on four occasions. None of these games resulted in a no-score draw.
Will form win the day and see Mainz claim their fourth unbeaten game in
a row against an Augsburg team with nothing to play for?
Players to watch: Mainz’s man of the moment Pablo De Blasis has scored
their last three goals. He scored a brace in their 2-0 victory against
Freiburg last weekend.
Eleven-goal Michael Gregoritsch (AUG) will hope for a change in fortunes
- he’s hit the post on four occasions this season.
Stat attack: Since May 2013, all 20 of Mainz’s penalties have found the
back of the net.
Augsburg have lost their last four home games with their opponents
scoring the last goal in each of these games.
